Chris Jewell is a qualified piano tuner He's also an accomplished
folk musician
who plays the fiddle, melodeon,
accordian and guitar for barn dances with the 3dB
Ceilidh Band and Step2
Ceilidh Band.
He trained at
Newark & Sherwood College between 1999 and 2002. This college is one
of only two piano tuning training establishments in England.
On completion of his training Chris had acquired four distinctions -
including one for tuning - and one credit, plus his tuning diploma.
Chris undertook a three year full-time course with study equally divided
in time between learning the art of tuning and repairs and restoration.
In Year 2 the students restored an upright piano, and in year 3 a grand
piano.
The college contains about 20 separate piano tuning booths with three or
four pianos in each of them. The students have a chance to tune
them all! One day they will be tuned up in pitch, the next day
they will be tuned down. This ensures that the students experience
all types of pianos, for each piano is different and has its own unique
characteristics.
Chris charges a standard fee for tuning pianos in the North Devon area and the job should take about one and a half hours.
